The night Nick Noland sent Calder to state, the whole town knew his name. By morning, everyone had a story that let them stay good.

A novel by W. Joe DeMiero

ABOUT THE BOOK

On Friday night, eighteen-year-old Nick Noland sends Calder, Texas, to its first state championship in forty years.

By sunrise, he is dead.

Nick is the kind of boy a town can turn into a story. Calder High’s star quarterback. USC-bound. Number 12. The only son of a widowed mother who has built much of her life around him. The boyfriend everyone expects to see beside Tessa Bell. The best friend Cal Rourke has spent years loving, competing with and trying to beat. In Calder, people know Nick’s face, his truck, his father’s story, his statistics, his future.

They know him. Or at least, each of them knows a part.

I’m Joe DeMiero. I’m a writer, business leader, husband, dad, son, and chronic starter of things.

I live in Bentonville, Arkansas, with my wife, our son, my mom, and four dogs.

My professional life has taken me through advertising, technology, retail and leadership. I led marketing at Sam’s Club, served as CEO of three large advertising agencies, and founded a few technology companies along the way.

Those jobs have put me inside a lot of complicated human systems. I’ve watched smart, decent people make extraordinary decisions. I’ve watched good intentions produce consequences nobody intended.
